Avoid These 7 Common Mistakes With Cannabis Edibles
If you’re anything like me, you strive to achieve close-to-perfection when cooking with weed. Or well.. cooking in general!
“I didn’t know I was doing it wrong”, and “Ohhhh… I didn’t do that step right” are phrases I have picked up and said out loud. Alone. To myself! Nobody answered… thank goodness!
I’ve been pretty blind to the small mistakes I was making along the way and had absolutely no idea that I could improve the flavor and consistency of my Canna-dishes.
When Cooking with Cannabis, You Need to Experiment!
Trial and error are also part of the process, but with these cooking tips, you may improve your batch for the better!
Start with a simple recipe, and work your way up into the more complicated edible dishes.
Pot brownies are a nice, easy recipe to conquer and then you could move up to weed cookies, and then the expert Chef dishes like weed cinnamon rolls or Cannabis Oreo Cake!

Mistake #1: Spending Too Much Money
Solution: A little really does go a long way!
We’ve heard so many tragic tales of Cannachefs messing up recipes to the thought that more is better. Nope! That’s not true.
There’s a magical ratio you may like to consider that goes a little something like this:
Lipids in the oil can only bind with so many cannabinoids at one time, so don’t waste your weed, and remember: Low and Slow.
Mistake #2: Cannabis in The Slow Cooker
Solution: Decarboxylate your weed in the oven. Period.
Before cooking with cannabis, you have to decarboxylate it. Period! No exceptions.
Don’t ever, ever, EVER throw a bunch of decarbed weed into your recipes or batters. You have to allow the cannabinoids to fully activate and bind to lipids.
That means you won’t feel much of anything and will have only succeeded in wasting your marijuana.
Mistake #3: Too High, Or Too Low?
Solution: Know your temperatures and sweet spots.
Not only is it crucial to decarboxylate your cannabis before cooking with it, but people: you have to decarboxylate it correctly.
That means setting your oven to the right temperature, letting it heat for long enough, and mixing it to activate the most surface area.
Mistake #4: The Grind of Ganja
Solution: Properly Grind your Cannabis.
Have your edibles ever tasted “grassy”? The grind of your cannabis might be too fine.
IF you use a food processor, or coffee grinder until you see a powder, it will:
- give your weed a strong plant-like taste
- make your oil or butter turn gree and might make it taste bad
- create a huge challenge for straining – you won’t be able to strain the good from the bad.
Once your cannabis has decarboxylated in the oven, grind it coarsely with a hand grinder.
Mistake #5: Bad Straining
Solution: Strain with cheesecloth or pantyhose.
Once you’ve infused your oil, it’s time to strain out the plant.
Cheesecloth or pantyhose is recommended because it allows oil to pass through it. You may want to squeeze out the remainder, but don’t! Just let gravity do it’s thing. No squeezing, please!
Mistake #6: Too Little, Too Much
Solution: Test your infusion.
Here’s a way to test your infusion to make sure it’s good. Here’s how.
Take 1/4 or 1/2 teaspoon of your oil as a personal dose and add it to a food or drink.
Wait an hour and see how you feel. This will help you determine what an appropriate single dose would be.
Mistake #7: Uneven Steven
Solution: Stir well. VERY well!
We’ve all been there: you made a perfectly good batch of cannabutter for your brownies, but after eating an entire piece, you don’t feel a thing.
So you eat another piece and you still don’t feel a thing.
The pal you shared your pot brownies with though? He or she’s totally buzzed and feeling all the feels.
You probably didn’t stir the batter well enough.
