What you do:
What do you love most about your skin?
It’s tricky to pinpoint what I love most about my skin… I suppose I like my skin tone, especially on my eyelids. As odd as it sounds, my eyelids are a taupe colour which often leads people to think I’m wearing eyeshadow when I’m not – my mother’s eyes were the same. It means I can just wear a slick of mascara and feel like I look polished. As for the rest of my face, my skin is a pale olive tone with a few freckles that can go quite fair in the winter months and warm in summer. Although I adore wearing make-up, I’m happy just applying my skincare and SPF and go base-free these days, which I rarely did in my twenties.
What one skin issue do you wish you could fix?
In recent years a few small moles have appeared on my face which I’d love to try and fix. I believe they’re actually small clusters of blood vessels but I have two on the centre of my forehead, just above my brows, and one on the side of my lip – that one really bothers me but I think laser treatment can rid me of them. I need to look into it. I’d also love to strengthen the skin around my eyes as they are particularly saggy. I can fix the discolouration with make-up, but I can’t change the contour. It’s funny, otherwise I have a baby face – people often assume I’m younger than I am and I get “You don’t look old enough to have children” a lot when I talk about my kids, who are nearly 8 and 3.
What’s your favourite skin product and why?
Choosing a favourite skin product is really hard but I think it would have to be essence. I use it religiously, as soon as I’ve cleansed. I feel like all other skincare is so much more effective and my make-up sits so much better when my skin is properly hydrated. I’m convinced it’s the essence. I have a few favourites: La Mer Treatment Lotion, Shiseido Treatment Softener and BioEffect EGF Essence… adore! I really feel the difference when I don’t use it. I remember reading about “hydrating waters” years ago and scoffing at them – now I’m a complete convert and preach about their benefits at every given opportunity!
What was your first skin product purchase?
I think my first skin product purchase was a Natural Collection Tea Tree Oil that I carried in my pencil case at school to treat spots. I’m sure I burnt my skin by over-applying it. Does that count? Other than that it was Garnier gentle cleansing milk and toner. It was called Synergie and it came in a pink bottle that my mum and sister used day and night – it was amazing but it’s sadly been discontinued.
What’s the one product you wouldn’t be without?
What wouldn’t I be without? Well as a make-up lover, it would probably be my cleansing oils. I find they dissolve my make-up so easily and efficiently. I have used the Bobbi Brown Soothing Cleansing Oil for years, but I also love the Romilly Wilde Light and Energy Serum Cleanser, Pixi Double Cleanse and Beauty Pie Japanfusion Pure Transforming cleanser, all of which have a lovely oily-milk texture when you add water.
Take us through your Sunday skincare routine:
My Sunday skincare routine varies I must admit. At the moment, I start with the Bobbi Brown Soothing Cleansing Oil, then follow with the Beauty Pie Japanfusion Pure Transforming Cleanser as my second cleanse. Then, I will use either the Kate Somerville ExfoliKate or Ole Henricksen Phat Glow Facial. I’ll then apply a Chantecaille Gold Energising Eye Recovery Mask and leave for a few minutes while my La Mer Treatment Softener goes on, followed by Shiseido Ultimune Concentrate and Augustinus Bader The Cream.
After the eye mask comes off, it’s eye cream time – I love either Willowberry Skin Eye Cream or Shiseido Benefiance Wrinkle Smoothing Eye Cream. On lips, I’ll smooth some By Terry Baume De Rose lip balm or the Summer Fridays lip balm (I’m obsessed) and I’m done. I’ll often finish with a spritz of Amanda Harrington Bronzing Face Mist in warm honey so I wake up on Monday morning with a bit of a golden glow – the best way to start the week. I also love a night cream when it’s time for bed. The new Leaves and Flowers Sleep Cream with CBD is incredible – I’m convinced it sends me into a deep sleep just when I’m applying it and my skin still feels soft to the touch when I wake up.
